Homefront Review

The first-person shooter genre is in a lot of trouble right now. With the never-ending success of the Call Of Duty series we are seeing an influx of uninspired shooters riding the coat tails of the modern warfare hype train. While most fall flat on their face, Homefront is a special case that shows there is still hope out there for a tired and weary genre.

What Homefront Got Right

Setting - What sets Homefront apart from similar games is the setting. Utilising real stores such as the White Castle restaurant in the opening level makes the player really feel like they are on the front lines in an environment that hits close to home. This broken down and destroyed America is as real as any game world gets.

Emotion - Several scenes throughout the game evoke real emotions. It is during these moments, particularly when you find the mass grave of slaughtered American civilians, that you cannot help but feel some form of sadness. It isn't often that a video game can evoke real emotions, but Homefront will stay with you long after the final mission.

Multiplayer - It's fast, furious and accessible but has depth once you scratch the surface. You can tell the developer has put an emphasis on multiplayer and as a result you receive one of the best multiplayer suites since CoD: Black Ops.

Battle Points - Kills, tasks and challenges not only earn you XP in multiplayer but also Battle Points, which can be spent to spawn vehicles or purchase special weapons and perks. It keeps the gameplay interesting and fresh and is an integral part as to why Homefront works so well online.

What Homefront Got Wrong:

Short Single-player - The single-player campaign may be rich in story and setting, but unfortunately it is over before it ever really begins. Clocking in at five hours, with such a rich story behind the campaign you can't help but feel there should have been more.

Graphics and Animation - While the graphics aren't terrible by any means, with the game utilising the Unreal 3 engine you’d expect Homefront to look better than it does. Character models are lacking and certain animations are almost laughable. Having said that, the game does run at a silky smooth frame rate.

Plays It Safe - It may be a FPS but Homefront seems to be too scared to step out and try something new. Relying on scripted sequences and hand-holding techniques you can't help but feel that we've seen it all before.

The Final Verdict

Supreme storytelling and a setting that is real and feels weighted is how Homefront separates itself from other modern warfare shooters on the market. With an impressive and addictive Multiplayer suite and some truly emotional moments in the single-player campaign, despite some shortcomings this title deserves to be played by fans of the genre.

Good review :)

Part of me wants to get this just for the multiplayer
Thanks @Jenrob

If you are looking for something that is a lot of fun and has some depth then it could be well worth your while until Battlefield 3 drops :)

I know I'll be playing this for a long time, unlike Black Ops which I was bored with after a few weeks.
Nice review

I hopeing to get this on ps3 later this week...
Not exactly worth the Money.. better off waiting for BF3
This score is accurate. Not the best but I'd say if you like Battlefield it's a good filler until BF3 is out
Glad that so many people agree with the review.

I love the multiplayer but given the great story I expected so much more from the singleplayer.

If you have the cash to splash I say go for it. If not though you might want to wait for a while.
So far in my experience this game smokes balls. The single player campaign feels about as fresh as those old socks left under your beds from yesteryear. Of course that's overlookable as multiplayer is the feature I and most Homefrontin' trigger junkies will be itching after.

But after 2 days of sitting in lobbys like some nightmare stopover in bangkok airport waiting for the endlessly delayed plane to arrive, I havent been able to join a single online match.

Apparently the servers are inundated, with game sales higher then expected and theres still not enough servers even though they've been increased.

So I just bought a $90 game that I dont know when I will be able to play online pending homefront getting their shite in alignment.

From me it gets a score of FAIL.
This is so interesting that so many of you have been experiencing issues. I've only had one dropped game and hardly any lag the whole time I have been playing. There are some new servers being installed in Sydney so that should hopefully alleviate the issues a number of you are experiencing.
yeah the lobbys suck you will get ten people in there and it just stalls , spent last 2 hours trying to get a game. [Rage] And i just fired this up on my other console and ive lost my rank was a 26 now back to 1 [Rage] [Rage]
Hmmm I haven't played since Sunday. I'm going to try and log on tonight and let you guys know how I go.

I'm using the PS3 version.
hmm, I live in Adelaide and I haven't has any lobby issues at all.

I find games easy but usually have red bar, however the red bar doesn't seem to effect gameplay at all, no lag.

I don't have amazing internet either. Hope it starts working for all of you soon :)
nice review
This game is friggen sick!

Lovin it
Single player was short but fun, Multiplayer is very very good...but now me just like hundreds of thousands of others that have bought this game are experiencing the problem...WE CANT ONLINE!!!! THANK YOU KAOS STUDIOS MAKING ME LOSE $60!!!
I almost bought it (there was a deal off OnLive, pre-order and get a free system) but as I've said before, I'm not that into FPS's and I'd rather get Conduit 2 or Battlefield 3 if I'm going to spend my cash on an FPS.... :O

Yeah how bad is it [Rage] Got this on the weekend and decided to give the multiplayer a shot. took forever to find a match but once i was in it was great =D
Just wish it didnt take so long to find a match
I took it back but kinda miss it now lol Will pick it up again when its cheaper, might not be as buggy by then
Hate it. Played single-player a little. Don't like it.
Horrible game. Cool review though, I don't think the graphics deserve a 7 though. They are horrible and the animations are PS2 worthy.
looks epic
This is a pretty fun game, the online is fun when you can find enough people on to play, I've tried a few times and there wasn't anyone really on, but then tried a few more times after that different days and found a game every time, the single player mode is sweet, you start off at a white castle haha... controls are typical FPS, with COD style aiming and weapon swap. over all I've gotten my money worth from it. (evil)
