Final Fantasy series publisher, Square Enix, has criticised the long lifecycle of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gaming consoles, calling it the "biggest mistake" Sony and Microsoft have ever made.
The publisher's worldwide technology director, Julien Merceron, said that the extended lifecycle has allowed competitors to enter the market with powerful and attractive hardware for developers.
"We have Sony and Microsoft talking about this generation lasting 7,8,9 or even 10 years and it's the biggest mistake they've ever made," he said.
Mr Merceron believes the generation "has been way too long", as some developers look to new hardware after creating games that fail on current consoles.
However, as no new home consoles have been released, "these developers went elsewhere to see if the grass was greener," he said.
"They found web browsers, they found iOS, they found other things and a lot of them won't come back to the hardware platforms," he predicted.
Microsoft and Sony's decision to extent the life of their consoles has allowed the emergence of other platforms, according to Mr Merceron.
What do you think? Do you think this generation has gone on for too long?
