Mobile games will soon be on par with console and PC - Activision

Activision's vice president of mobile development Greg Canessa spoke to CVG on the future of mobile gaming.

"The CPU and GPU capabilities of mobile devices will reach Xbox 360 levels of graphical fidelity and processing power within the next generation," he said.

"The games that Activision publishes on console, the games it publishes on PC, pretty soon we'll be publishing those kinds of experiences on tablets and smartphones."

Activision are also looking into their 30 year portfolio to see what games they could revive and bring to the mobile platform.

Though I doubt a 30 year old game would need current gen graphics that can be seen in games like Uncharted or Halo.

"We have a rich thirty-year history from the Atari days to the Blizzard merger. We have about 350 different brands and IPs to work with. That's legacy IP, that's triple-A IP, and that's licences with other companies."

They believe the mobile platform is serious business and wants a slice of it.

Mobile is an emerging business for the company and it's something we're taking very seriously.”

"Console and PC are still the major focus, but we feel that mobile is an important segment for our brands going forward," he said.

Greg Canessa believes they can fill the void of action games on mobiles that has yet to be fully utilised, mainly due to interface issues.

"I'm really interested in what we can do in the action space. I think that on mobiles there has been a lack of great action games due to user-interface issues. I think there's a tremendous opportunity for us to innovate in that space."

"I know there's another company that paid crazy money for mobile companies and spent a lot of time trying to mesh them together. That's not our approach. We are taking an organic approach, building things from the ground-up," he added.

Is it closer than we think or did Greg have a little bit too many?

Up to PC? Lol no. Console sure, considering they stick around for ages. The 360 and PS3 are equivilent to a 10 year old gaming PC. Thats an entire generation.
yeah not to sure what type of pc's they have at Activision's mobile division. Maybe they have macs? [MOG]
If he "spoke to CVG", why did you source Gameplanet?

Anyway, it would be naive to think mobile wouldn't eventually reach 360 graphical capabilities. Look at where mobiles were 7-8 years ago.

He's really just stating the obvious.

Also, Activision is investing like millions into mobile development atm, so it's in the company's best interests to talk up mobile development.
HA! Just like it was going to be a couple of years ago?

Mobile games are like public toilets; people will use them if they have to, but everyone would prefer to sit on their own toilet in their home. They are settling.

Unless consoles cease to exist, mobile games are always going to be supplementary to a fuller experience.
I've seen mobile games with just as much content as DS games: for about one fortieth of the price... :)
Won't kill off home consoles but portable consoles? Sure
