Games "need to grow up" says David Cage.

David Cage, the man behind Beyond, expressed his frustrations at Gamescom with the fact that too little developers produce games with mature subject matter. With Heavy Rain as example, Cage has been looking to push emotions in games for a long time.

"I think we should have more courage in our industry and take more risks, because I think this is what the industry needs now," said Cage to Gamasutra. "I mean, how many first person shooters can you make? How many monsters/aliens/zombies can you kill in games? There's a moment where we need to grow up. We need to grow up."

"I often think that the industry suffers of the Peter Pan syndrome. It's the fact that we don't want to grow up, so we stay kids. But there is a moment where you need to grow up as an industry. And you cannot keep up with the Peter Pan syndrome. You need to grow. And I think this is the right time".

some games do need to be made with a serious story line and or gameplay but ....there does need to be just silly games for children and just days where you do want to be mentally challanged ie modnation racers
For some reason I thought this article was about Nicholas Cage.

David "i put myself in my own games" Cage
nothing stopping him from continuing on with it. There's enough 'adult' content out there to be content with.

I have a feeling there's more to this article then its letting on cause he's just coming off as a bit of a douche.

a little bit is a understatement
Games should be more linear because I hate sandbox games.

It might seem so, but I just thought it would bring a bit of debate into the matter. For a small part i agree with his statement because there are too many games that play the same, but on the other hand he's egoistic for calling his game mature and downgrading the rest. Actually there are many mature games, they just don't play the same as his.
Mr. Cage must own a Wii or something, you'd be struggling to find a game rated PG or under in the Xbox section :P

This isn't the first time he's spoken about this. The reality is that he is speaking from a creative person's point of view, and not those that have the capacity to fund innovative, new ideas that don't have a market.

Considering the current financial environment, it's irresponsible to fund new ideas that are unproven. Sony is proof of this. Yeah, it's giving us a stack of awesome, new, innovative, emotional games, but at what cost? Dwindling revenue, no profit, troubling sales, non-existant marketing and uncertainty for the future.

Sometimes you need to play it safe and just wait for the bad times to end. There is a reason why EA is turning Dead Space into an action series: survival horror is a niche market that doesn't sell, and it's hard to justify to investors why you spend millions on a game with such a limited target demographic.

Thankfully Cage's only influence is on game design and NOT publisher business models. We'd be facing another industry crash if the industry hung on his every word.

He's taking the moral high ground to justify attacking successful competitors, because he knows that in making heaps of FPS and zombie games, you're assured a hefty profit. But if the product is good and people are entertained, who is he to say that one genre is being over-saturated? The market dictates what games are made, not the developers.

That's why we have publishers. Publishers didn't really exist in the 80s, and the outcome was E.T. [Facepalm]
I have been feeling the same lately. The amount of FPS compared to other games is overwhelming. I more feel like we need to get away from FPS and diversify.
