Call of Duty Elite is now free, loses DLC

Activision has made its full Call of Duty Elite service free to all gamers, minus its included downloadable content.

Beginning with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 next month, Elite will be free to all players.

More: Black Ops 2 DLC might not be released on Wii U

DLC will be available either individually or collectively through a "Season Pass" -- which was included as part of Elite with last year's Modern Warfare 3.

The Season Pass is priced at 4000 Microsoft Points for all four DLC packs released throughout 2013. As always, each will also be available separately for 1200 Microsoft Points (about $19).

should've been this way all along, Elite minus dlc isn't worth money - elite with dlc for mw3 isn't either tbh

Elite on its own never included the DLC.

Paid Elite = DLC.

Agree that this is probably better than paying for a "premium" service. I think this will help the CoD community overall.

*shrugs* I paid the $60 or whatever and ended up saving on the maps so this doesn't really change anything for me. I guess it is more incentive for people.

Maybe the GoW/Borderlands etc. season passes did well enough to justify the change?

i know paid elite had the maps, i have it - my point was that it sucked people couldn't properly use elite without paying for it
sucks season pass isn't included in hardened and CP edition but i guess it kept the price down a bit.

Any publisher that thinks that 100% of its consumer base is going to pay for a subscription is naive. 2 million paid subscribers was definitely a success. Not sure what your definition of "failure" is. First year done and it's basically the dust has settled and people know of the service. The kinks are out, the community is settled and people know what they're getting.

Also, the Season Pass feature is better and allows more people to interact with the community. The only way Elite was a failure was in that it separated the community straight down the line between those that wanted to pay and those that didn't. With this system now, people that pay are only getting DLC on the cheap, rather than DLC + a community-enhance feature. Now everyone has access to the community feature.

What we’ve found is that Elite offers a lot of really engaging services that were only reaching a portion of our community. We think that by making these services available to a much wider audience, it will be better both for our players and for us.

Still classified as paid up though? Wasn't it factored in the price? It was one of if not the main selling point of the edition.

exactly, thankyou Beta. the hardened for example was $50 USD more for mw3 than BO2.. and if you think they are unhappy with 2 million x $50 USD... you're wrong

Yeah it's included.

I'm not saying it's bad, it's a great number.

It'd just be interesting to know how many people who didn't get the Hardened Edition then signed up.

Plus that subscription cost is pretty much 100% profit to activision, minus server and server maintenance costs. They probably make more money off of Elite (and will make off the season pass) than they make off of the game itself.

Keep in mind that selling the DLC separately has a 30% or more takeaway by the distributor (Microsoft, Sony, Steam, etc.). This way they get the money direct to them, digitally; no middle man. Even after the savings the consumer makes, Activision still saves a buttload of cash. (evil)
