Wii U scepticism holding back Take-Two

by Gaetano Prestia Featured 0 Comments 12 Votes 801 Views 19/06/2012 Back to News

Take-Two is sceptical of Nintendo's new console, Wii U, but reminds confident it can be "one of the winners" of next-gen consoles.

That's according to the company's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, who once said that "making good games isn't good enough. I believe good is the new bad. Games need to be great."

Mr Zelnick said that, while gamers and industry figures should expect Nintendo's new console to house plenty of sports and family games, he was "sceptical" overall about its market potential.

However, he remains vigilant as to the company's direction with other "next-gen" hardware from the likes of Microsoft and Sony. “[New console launches] separate the winners from the losers — and we fully expect to be one of the winners.”

Zelnick believes that “owned intellectual property, top-tier technology, top-tier development talent and a strong balance sheet” remain the core of a four-pillar success plan for Take-Two.

“Some of our competitors have had this trajectory where they extract a lot of value and the IP goes away," explained Mr Zelnick. We’re trying really hard to build permanent IP. And if you have to rest the title for a few years, over time you’ll extract more value."

He's making obvious associations with franchises like Call of Duty, which publisher Activision pumps out a new title for annually.

"We’re not trying to create something good and market the hell out of it. We’re trying to delight customers with something great — and market hell out of it.”

The company's next big title after Max Payne 3, which launched late last month, will be Grand Theft Auto V, which is expected to launch within the next twelve months.

Further to my previous blog with the promo marketing stuff (i.e. crap I give away to help promote the name but didn't really expect people to buy) I've now started selling shirts/clothes.
