Consoles have 'over-reliance' on 'pieces of spinning plastic' - Epic

Epic Games feels current hardware is up to the standard of its own technology, according to founder, Tim Sweeney.

Mr Sweeney said that developer is "aiming very high", but that the intended platforms don't actually exist yet.

"To be able to go and easily buy and download games like we do in the iOS App Store on future consoles will be incredibly valuable to us as developers, and make it that much easier to get our games out without over-reliance on manufacturing a whole bunch of pieces of spinning plastic to ship to consumers," he said.

Mr Sweeney said that the main difference between social platforms with games like FarmVille, and consoles, was that console "define the high-end gaming experience".

"When you look for the best graphics available in the whole game industry today, you look at Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and those games are the best out there, bar none. And so the big opportunities for future consoles is to bring that to an entirely new level by delivering a dramatic increase in raw computing power," said Mr Sweeney.

Ideally, Epic Games wants "as many teraflops as is economically possible to deliver to consumers, because that enables us to create the best quality experience as possible, and that will drive people to buy a new machine."

Yet Epic leaves behind their innovative PC roots (and largely tell their PC gamers to smeg off) to make Mad Mad Bank (TM) off console gaming.

Nah, I just meant that as the sort of thing an Epic Games character would say. Sure, accuse the Canadian guy of making a Tom Cochrane reference! ^_^
Article about Epic. Scan for Cliffy B. Not there. Pass. :P
The PC community is not what it used to be. Unreal Tournament 3 when compared to UT2004 and UT99 was a massive flop. Hence Epic's shift to consoles. And yes I am aware UT3 was multi-platform, but the community content that was made in the days of UT99 and UT2004 is almost non-existant.

Well, no, the PC community is still there, but the are just fewer games that give us the amount of "community-building" that we used to. Things like level editors and mod tools are inexcusably a thing of the past for many games, with far too many companies happy to make gamers reliant on said companies to do things like (facepalm) pay for maps.
