Gears of War is an "over-the-shoulder" third-person shooter that places emphasis on using cover to avoid taking damage while strategically moving towards enemy forces. The game uses a number of weapon archetypes, but predominately featured is the Lancer, an assault rifle that has a mounted chainsaw bayonet that can be used to instantly kill foes at close range.
Gears of War takes place on the planet Sera, colonized by humans. Shortly after colonization, the humans discovered a liquid called Imulsion which became a highly valued power source, and led to several wars between nations. After a violent 79-year war, the humans created the Coalition of Organized Governments (COG) to bring peace to the planet, using its forces, called "Gears" to maintain peace. However, shortly after the COG's formation, humans became aware of another sentient race living in the depths of the planet, the Locust, when the Locust tunneled up from underground and massacred over a quarter of the human population in a single day known as "Emergence Day". The COG forces have been fighting to protect the remaining humans for 14 years.
