I just dont know what to do now...
I cant find any cars that i actually want...

Do i buy a 6 with 200,000+ klms on it and charge it when i get my opens?
Do i buy a 4 with 100,000+ klms on it and turbo it when i get my opens, but in the mean time im driving a POS that all of my mates leave me for dead in (even the land cruisers)...
Do i buy the biggest POS i can and just drive it until im on my opens and buy a power house, but in the mean time i dont gain any driving skills so when i buy the powerhouse i kill myself in the first corner...

I have $5000 to play with but dont know how to go about spending it or keeping it.

I need a car reasonably soon because i have had my L's for two years and i have 11 months to get up the last of my hours (50) before i have to start again.

A mate offered to do up his Automatic VR with all the gizmo's and shit then sell it to me for $4000... but i dont know if i can really trust him to rebuild a car thats safe. (road worthy in this town doesnt mean shit, they dont even check brake pads ffs)

This is what i have been thinking about for the past two days.

I have been looking around in town and online at cars in my price range... the best bargains are 4cyl turbo's with low k's and a rwc in a manual... Namely a shit tonne of soarers and celicas.

But my dad wont let me put anything in his name and get a permit to drive it... all he has seen me drive is my old ute... and the only thing he got from that is i lost it on a dirt road and crashed... i have driven some reasonably grunty cars (maybe not legaly) and handled them quite well... even my old ute, on the bitumen i "drove like a champ" according to my brother in law... went drifting...

How about some actual advice from people with experience?
My dad is stubborn and my mates are trying to pressure me into buying the VR with over 200,000...
no offence but you sound like a typical teenager. you got all the talk but none of the skills or action to back it up. if you cant handle a bog standard ute on a dirt road i wouldnt go getting a powerhouse anytime soon. plus how can you not have your license yet?? just make the hours up if you have to. i did at least 150 legit hours in 14 months when i was on L's.

it your first car so just buy something that takes your fancy. i wanted to charge mine when i first got it but now i see that its just a bog exec with no other features so i would upgrade to get anything else.

plus u will learn you dont actually need 2000HP to drive daily. 200kws is more than enuf. when you are young if you want anymore than that its best to make sure its got some form of stability control.

also all this talk of drifting and hooning doesnt make you "cool". i admit i drive fast sometimes and i give it a rev for attention but i have learnt the limits of my car and driving ability (especially in the wet neither are up to scratch) so i dont recklessly endanger people.

its clear u dont have much experience so i would suggest finish your hours off in your parents car and then save up and get something a bit better when you can afford it.
I havent gotten my hours up because my parents wont let me use mums car because it has no insurance, and its a bloody commo wagon auto. My dad is bloody slack and no matter how much i nag him he wont go driving with me.

It wasnt bog standard ute either, LSD, Shortened tray, one tonne shitty tires, no abs, and my first time on dirt. Like i said i can handle myself on the black stuff but have no experience on dirt.

I may aswell be a typical teenager, im not concerned about hooning to be cool i just wanted to see what i could handle and how i could handle it, And im not stupid as if i did it on a road with people and houses, i did it out of town on an empty road with nothing but open flat dirt on either side.

I dont need excessive power but im so used to my 6cyls i dont want to get anything with any less grunt. I also just sold my ute because it got to the point where everything needed replacing. I dont want to buy another car that will be in the same situation.

Yes im defensive but im looking for car advice not life advice. If i wanted that i would go to my parents.

I'm off to bed. Maybe i will chill out and be a little easier to talk to tomorrow. But please car advice not life advice.

Ren, buy a cheap reliable 4cyl.
Do not get aspirations to super/turbo charge an NA engine.
Costs to much to make it worth it.
Factory turbo is the much much better option.
What Doyl said or similar. Get a clean Civic or something like that. Looks decent, cheap to run, cheap to repair and insure.

I'm surprised how quickly those engines decelerated to idle after being revved high, I thought there would be inertia in the crank to keep spinning for longer.

Gear crunch at 3:47 in the 3rd vid, that Camaro is nuts, all that power though... I'd prefer something modern with airbags and other safety equipment for 2000HP.

Going from a few of their other videos I think the entire block is their own design.

Do what Doyl and Guyver said, get a 4cyl thats cheap to run, wont break down, and doesn't cost heaps to begin with. 4 cylinders are fine for normal driving, there can be a bit to be desired on a highway in some older cars especially when overtaking uphill, but they can still do 110 fine. Don't bother turbo-ing it later, just sell it and get something bigger or already has a factory turbo on it.

Get a Magna dude. Everyone will hate on you for it but they're bulletproof, powerful, comfortable and cheap. 98 onwards manual. Don't assume they're slow, they drop Commodores stock for stock with ease, just have to live with FWD which sounds like it wouldn't do you any harm.

Easy choice if you don't care what people think.

I was just about to mention to make sure it's 98 onwards. All the previous 4 cylinder versions are complete rubbish.
Thank you fellas. I was looking at clean civics last night, there are a fair few in my price range avalible.

I found a celica with awd amd drooled... But it has a turbo so dad said no.
Bought my first 4wd a few weeks back
06 navara str 3.0l turbo diesel immaculate, already driven to kingaroy drives like a dream! Also took it offroad in bundabeg to test the soft sand out was good fun :D

gunna cost you at least a grand to get that on the road. doesnt have rego or roadworthy and needs new tires and a few other things. just be minful of the extra spending needed

Unlike most cars Honda motor's (especially the VTEC) are still good even with high K's. That is as long as the previous owner didn't keep revving the crap out of it and stuck with the service schedule.
My work mate had an old Prelude with 450 thousand K's on it and it's still kicking along [WTF]
The only input my dad has is "Pft honda" or "Pfft mitsubishi" or "Not going in my name"... The boss keeps telling me to get a hundie X_X

Problem: Not going to please anyone.
Solution: please myself.


But i like a stock look civic with a few extras.

for 5k, you're probably not going to get a safe car with low kms, that looks good

That has decant K's on it. but how much would i be looking at for that list of repairs (can do it myself)

Work required for a legitimate RWC. (have QLD Transport registered mechanics notes on inspection of car)
- rear drivers side door handle (repair)
- LHS inner CV boot (replace)
- lower front control arm bushes (replace).
- Left hand rear wheel bearing (replace)
