Whatever Happend To Space Combat Games?

The above screenshot is from Freespace 2 what I consider to be one of - if not - the best space combat game ever released. For its time the graphics were pretty great, but what really made it stand out was its ability to convey the starkness, the coldness and stillness of space.

I used to play a lot of space combat games - I love all the Star Wars series - TIE Fighter, X-Wing, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Rebel Alliance, and Wing Commander was also pretty good back in the day too!

I was even into it back on the PSX with the Colony Wars series which I personally thought was pretty ace.

Now it seems the genre has up and died. I can't remember the last time I saw a high profile space combat game come out.

So why aren't they around anymore? Do you miss them? What were some of your favourites?

Space combat games have always intrigued me, but I've never had the propensity to get good at them.

I actually get dizzy playing them too, which I'm not sure is right. @_@

I did see this, thought it was on sale though for cheaper than 20. Also I believe it has co-op?

And why are you tempted to get this doyl, thought you were still in Amurica? Or at least on holidays.

Still in 'Merica but I'm always looking out for the future :P
I absolutely loved descent and the clones that came from it and anything new that looks similar I would like to back if its any good.

16 player coop or something.
