The Dorklyst - 6 Things Rockstar keeps doing wrong

Some of you probably already know about dorkly.com, it's run by collegehumor and it's just a tonne of awesome video game articles/jokes/videos.

They recently posted this article and I have to say I agree with a lot of it, especially some of the stuff about mission replaying and movement speed of characters and slightly agree with the over-realistic feel.

Have a read and tell us if you think they're right or wrong.
They are totally right, especially about the holding a button to run.

They are right about everything except Cover Based Shooting.

A lot of games use this technique. It's not a cop out, you don't want to get shot in a gun fight, so you get cover. Waist-high walls encompassing the landscape is the problem and Rockstar do a good job at avoiding that (for the most part), I think.
But the cover based shooting feels tacked on, So you get camera issues and usually stick to the wrong side of an object and get shot to pieces.
The mechanics of it aren't flawless, but the variety in things to get cover behind is impressive and did help add to the immersion in my playtime with GTA IV.
Good article I like it when someone puts in effort with those type of articles.
Also I've forgotten about dorkly.com and haven't been there in a long time, thanks for reminding me.
They always post awesome lists like this, I might make a weekly thread about it when the new lists come out, they always generate good conversation on a big enough scale for a couple channels to get involved.
I go there at least once a week and check out their original videos - always good for a laugh!

Seems to be blowing a lot of steam. Games like Vice City and SA had all of these things, but countered them with other things (bikes in SA, for example, so as to replace walking/running).

Some things are tedious -- pizza delivery, etc., -- but they are more gimmicks that try to individualize the experience and put you in a capacity to have responsibility.

I think the cover in GTA IV was fantastic.

I also thought the vastness of the world in Red Dead Redemption was indicative of the source material and a good representation of the world at that time. Its vastness and randomness kind of defines the experience. It's when a world is large and empty but dictates a lot of interaction. See Just Cause.

You guys realise that this was made on the Red Dead Redemption Forum and therefore the only ones that can see it are admin/mods, right?

How can we realise what never happened :P

I never really liked driving in GTA so a constant run instead of bursts would have been cool for me. I don't really play those games much though so it's not a big deal for me.
Where did you find it? :O

Driving was probably the best thing about the pre-GTA IV GTA games. Some of the stunts and vigilante missions were a lot of fun. And I liked the arcadey nature of the driving. That was all lost with GTA IV though, in favour of realism. I really like GTA IV, still one of my favourite games and worlds this gen, especially after the DLC, but it lacked the fun element that made the earlier GTA games so awesome.
Totally agree Tano - GTA IV was great but it lacked some of the "fun" elements out of the series.

They can’t even get quick-travel right. In GTA IV you can ride the subway, but that’s only helpful if the place that you’re trying to go is near a subway.

Taxis? [Shifty]

Agree with most the other stuff though.
I don't really get the complaint against holding a button to run.

The character has stamina... so why wouldn't this option be available?

And whilst I agree that is does seem largely superfluous that running isn't the default speed of the character, it's not really a pressing concern to hold a button down.
@Beta if you love R* so much then why don't you marry them.

they keep making games enough said
I feel like playing The Warriors!
Red Dead Redemption is one of my all time favourite games.

Agree with Beta about the vastness adding to the experience of the Wild West in that game.
i only agree with holding a button to run, the lack of save checkpoints and some stealth missions.

although cover can be tedious and so too travelling large distances but thats part of the game... how dumb would it be if u could just travel anywhere, anytime its not a superhero game!!
