That "Foxtel on Xbox" TV Ad

I wish I could find it to link to. But has anyone else had the displeasure of having to sit through this complete joke of a television ad? You know the one where a group of hot girls are querying their friend about her Foxtel, where she says, "Oh, I've got it through Xbox", to which her friend replies, "Through your Xbox? Since when did you get an Xbox?". And then the stereotypical surfer gamer dude with a ripped body comes into screen, and the girls all laugh, before one says, "where can I get one of them?"

Can you imagine this sort of Xbox ad 2 years ago? It's not like they're even trying to appeal to the core 360 demographic. They had a bunch of women all standing around giggling and laughing and speaking like as if they actually know what an Xbox is and how to actually use it. Microsoft are clearly attempting to appeal to that non-gamer demographic, which is fair enough, but what does this mean for the type of games we get in the future? I think the Xbox 360 of 2005-2009 is dead. Now we have the super-casual, super-accessible, Wii-clone with hardly any exclusives. And it's no secret that Microsoft is going to focus primarily on Kinect this year. As Steve Ballmer said last week: "2011 is all about Kinect".

I love Kinect, but... [Facepalm]

I kind of wish Microsoft had gone in the same direction with Kinect as Sony did with Move; a casual market presence for a casual product, instead of aggressive market infiltration for a product that is meant to appeal to a casual market.

I know I branched off a bit there from the original concern about the Foxtel on Xbox TV ad, but it seems to be all interconnected with the direction Microsoft is going in with the console. Anyone else concerned?

It's a partnership. It's just as much Xbox as it is Foxtel. Do you see when they say, "It's on my Xbox" and then you get a nice, big, long, clear and clean shot of the new Slim Xbox 360? That's Microsoft saying "hello!".

if it turns out to be like the wii I'm going to smash it with a hammer.. I love playing games like fallout etc yes I play a little bit of shovel ware but when it comes down to it I would rather play a game that can take me 100 hours :(

I can't say that it bothers me. First of all I don't watch much TV so I've only seen the ad once. Secondly, I'm a gamer first and foremost and I can recognise that the XBOX they are advertising here isn't "my" XBOX.

The hardcore market was a big enough market to keep the industry afloat for a long time. I doubt they'll be abandoning us anytime soon. Also I think a number of these new casual gamers will become hardcore like us.

I think they are focusing on Kinect this year because it will be their biggest growth area. You don't have to abandon your core sales to do that. They just want a focus point for the year and casual non-core gamers need aggressive marketing to attract them. That's what you do from a marketing perspective.

I'm far more concerned by Sony's seeming abandonment of Move. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on there. The only game so far that appeals to me is Time Crisis. If there was just one more title I wanted I'd pick one up.

So yeah, the ad isn't meant for me so I'm not concerned.

Imagine if its a bunch of dudes drinking beer, chatting away about how one of them got a new fridge that can do something special, one dude goes 'i didnt know you had one of these fridges', to which a 'hot chick' walks past, and one of them comments 'where can i get one of them' itd be off the air. its a stupid ad and all the worse for everything about it that is sexist

ok so I finally saw the ad".......................

hmmmmmm...... at least everyone was smoking hot in the clip hey guys?? I noticed next top model being advertised a lot on the same ad.. Im not 100% sure but I'm guessing the girls on the clip were in next top model cause I swear I had seen them in it.. also they were bad actors which makes sense.. hot but bad.. so they are amateurs..

I did find it a tiny bit sexist from both sides.

Not the first time an adversitement for videogames (that doesn't involve clips from any games) has missed the mark by a long shot and ultimately just insulted heaps of people.
