Another one has just hit 6.3 magnitude.

Very dramatic pictures on channel 7 now.

Pretty scary I hope our NZ buddies are all fine.

Made my donation (10 GBP), being the end of the month couldn't do a lot but if everyone can spare a few quid/dollars it'll all add up.

So true whatever gets donated big or small will go well to help them out in this time of need.
Sick of hearing about looters in natural disasters, happened in the QLD floods and now in the Quake in Canterbury, also just heard that someone robbed the home of a Christchurch woman missing in the quake-devastated CTV building, while the family wait close by in hope she's still alive. There needs to be stronger laws prosecuting these people, Lowest of the low!
IIRC the maximum penalty for looting in a natural disaster is life in prison can't get much stronger but I agree with you Shakobe about looters, horrible disaster though & I think the Kiwi's might roll us in Cricket tomorrow night channeling the emotion against the Aussie's.

They said on the news police have already made 8 arrests on looters / burglars. This was yesterday so it may have gone up.

That is so low to do that, what must these people think but I'm guessing they're just ferals anyway that couldn't care less about anyone but them selves.
Definitely Winga.

Just on the news about the earthquake the death toll has risen to 113 (give or take) and a fair bit more are still missing.

I'm still waiting for the Grand Chancellor Hotel to collapse :S

If it doesn't collapse on its own, they're going to have to level the building themselves. There's simply too much structural damage to even consider fixing it. What's worse is that if anyone, by some ungodly miracle, is still alive in there...they're going to have to die with the building. Its a ****ing tragedy.
Basically yes. But once they clear majority of the buildings and get ready to rebuild, They'll be able to build them to withstand such force. Because majority of the buildings were heritage buildings (espically in that town near the epicenter)

Wow, it's amazing that over 200 people are still missing.. Such a large number.... :'(
Horrible.

But seriously 2012? come one said i was an idiot a few years ago for saying 2012 might happen now i think its bs everyone thinks its going to happen?

Poor NZ. Its weird the night before the disaster i was talking about going on a cruise to my mum and id have to leave from nz...

That is shit about the people in the building if their alive wouldn't they be thinking "why isn't anyone trying to save us"?
@Dusty Lids

It's not uncommon, Earthquakes in NZ. Just not large ones. But like i said, They'll rebuild, Stronger, Better, More aware. You learn from things like this, Through all the pain, Suffering and loss.
I donated to this as well, this is really devastating.

The occurrences of natural disasters are much more frequent than 100 years ago.

As best they can. It's not easy to prepare for an earthquake of that magnitude, but you're right in saying they will become more aware and learn from it.

I don't think so.. just that the ones from 100 years ago are far less documented.

And there wasnt nearly as many people :)
i live in Wellington which has a fault line going straight through the middle of the city. our airport and harbour roads are built on reclaimed land. I have been told since i was 9 that we are well overdue for a major one here as well. the tragic irony off the chrischurch disaster is that there were no known fault line areas so they were considered safe until the first big one hit last year.

What has been so good about the rescue operation is how many countries, including you fantastic aussies, have come to help out. yeah there have been vermin trying to loot and steal but the unity of different nations coming togeather at a time of tragedy is inspiring to me.
Apparently some Rugby World Cup games have to be moved now for later in the year. Quite sad :( it's a big rugby town, isn't it?
