How to get greatest resolution

i have a sharp full HD LCD and i was wondering how i can get the highest screen resolution using the component cables. do i have to put it in the slots with the blue, green, yellow etc or can i just pust itin the red,white,green slots which is in the reciever because then i can use the surround sound

Composite = red, blue, green

component = red, white, yellow

Put the composite cables in the back of your TV. Ensure the 360 display cable (plugged into the back of your 360) is switched to "HD-TV". Go to set-up and mess around with display and ensure it's on "1080p".

Get the component cables and plug them into the back of your reciever. Ensure the reciever is turned to "Video" as the audio source (may be different for yours. Mines a bit old) and bobs your uncle my friend

yep, you've pretty much nailed gaetano, personally now that i've got my vga cable i wont be going back to component, just wish my xbox had hdmi...

Thanks for your answer Gaetano. everything u said was 100% correct but i dont think i will be able to plug the component and composite into both the tv and receiver at the same time because they r just a bit to far apart. Thanks anyway.
what resolution is better this or should i just buy a hdmi cable becaue my 360 has the hdmi port in it because it's the new 'Pro'. If so how much is the hdmi cable and does it have to be a microsoft xbox 360 one. At the end of the day all i want is the highest resolution possible for both DVD's and of course my games

No, it doesn't have to be an XBOX 360 (I don't think there is an official MS one?)

HDMI is generally better, so yes, go out and buy one. Take advantage of the HDMI. It's crisper.
