I put the cream in the bowl

and i soaked my brush in hot water.. but i didnt shake off enough water from it.. and got a terrible lather

If your bristles keep falling off, it is probably a cheapo synthetic bristle brush? Lathering on the face is fine.

i face lathered until a couple of weeks ago

Bowl lathering takes a bit longer but is better :D

I watched that video a few pages back. Never knew shaving required so much effort. Thats probably why i never get the best shave. lol. I just whack on some cheap shaving cream and do it with my normal 5 blade type razor. How do these compare with the type of razor in the vid? I am pretty lazy so let it grow to fair length before i shave normally. Do they work well when there is a fair bit of length?

They work better than cartridge razors for the same growth.

Not only will they give you a closer shave but with less irritation too.

For a great entry level brush, I highly recommend you take a look at the Frank Shaving range. Their quality is fantastic for the price. A little side note as well, hair from the badger is not referred to as 'bristle', as this term is often associated with boar bristle brushes. These are stiffer than badger hair.

Cartridge razors are designed to remove all your hair in the one stroke. Double-Edge razors on the other hand, if used correctly, are supposed to reduce the length of hair with each pass you make. If you have a lot of growth, you may need to reapply your lather 2 or 3 times and do more passes, but the result will be a very smooth, irritation free shave.
