Lucid Dreaming

Hey all, I know this is kind of a weird topic and may even sound false to some, but I find it very interesting and it's all very methodical and that.

I thought it'd be cool to start a thread where we can discuss how to do things, or anyone's experiences for those interested.

I know it's not something for everyone, but some people might like to try it out.

Lucid Dreaming is basically coming to the realization that you are dreaming and you can learn to control it to basically do whatever you want.

Kind of the ultimate sandbox game, cept while you are asleep, to you it's real.

I recommend checking out the film Waking Life, it's about Lucid dreaming and offers a bunch of great things to think about.

Some tips to become lucid are to always do Reality Checks (RC's)
Some of them can be
Sticking your finger through your hand (In a dream it will go through)
Holding your nose and trying to breathe (In a dream you'll be able to breathe)
And thinking about how you got to where you are.
If you make RC'ing a habit and do it regularly then you could do it in your dream which will make you lucid.

I'm just learning about control now, but what I've read is that if you turn your back and imagine what you want to spawn behind you is there, when you turn around it will.

You should also keep a dream journal, this makes you remember your dreams better. I don't and I forget them a lot :P

Another thing to do is keep a look out for reoccurring characters or elements.
Something that happens in all of my dreams is that I lose my iPhone :P

It can be best done in the morning as well, it's all sciency and stuff but it's got to do with chemicals your body produces in the morning that makes you dream differently. So if you sleep in and drift in and out of sleep, that's the best time to have a crack at it.

I had my first ever lucid dream this morning. I was walking down K-Mart picking up Blurays to buy until I had this thought that it was a waste of time buying shit in my dreams (Which is something I do regularly) so then that made me RC.
I stuck my finger through my hand and my finger went through, then I held my nose and could still breathe.
Then I just went and bounced around lol, messing with gravity :P

Anyone here already had any Lucid experiences? Or anyone wanna try?

I know to some this is pretty lame, but think of all the things you could do! :P
Even though it isn't actually real, whilst your dreaming it's no different to reality :P
I used to have them often as a kid and still do once in a while. Used to think it was normal but have been told it's unusual and never happens to most people. Not sure if it's possible to force yourself into one - your mind will be conditioned to accept whatever's in the dream, if you're conscious enough to check then you're already LD'ing. And yeah you can manipulate the environment to some extent, but it isn't as exciting as it sounds. Mostly I would be trying to wake up and it can be frightening at times when I can't. They are not like nightmares where a simple shock can bring you back.
Meh... this all probably sounds like BS (evil).

Sounds interesting, I think i've entered a few of them where i realized and could do whatever i wanted. But i don't go into depth with it, Once i realize i'm dreaming i guess i kind of just go with the flow and try and enjoy it as much as possible...
Sounds interesting [MOG]

You are usually drifting in and out of sleep when you have one and they are pretty easy to wake up from, not that you'd want to.
When I LD'd I didn't have my entire mind back if that makes sense.
I still wasn't thinking very rationally, it was a very minimum state of LD I guess. One of the first thing I'd planned to do when I LD'd was just to mess with gravity, and that's what I did :P
Didn't last very long :P

I'm not sure whether you can become SO lucid that the reality of the fact that your dreaming really sinks in so much that you get frightened by the thought.
It's a dream, you're already really relaxed :P
Wow... thats unbelievable...
I also cannot think rationally, it's frightening because I'd get the idea that something's happened to me IRL (fainted, coma, dead... not that dead people can dream, but I won't know that).
Had it happen in nightmares too. You know that feeling of fear which builds up and wakes you from shock? Being (semi) conscious and knowing what's gonna happen is not fun -_-.
I scared gaetano last time I explained my dream in another thread.. I love lucid dreaming though.. I'm always having them.. guess cause I'm a light sleeper cause I have a baby or something? I honestly just had one before but not that exciting.. I had a shower then my daughter wanted a bath but the plug was broken.. I fixed it with magic in my dream.. then I had a dream about picking them up at school on my husbands dirt bike. somehow my car turned up at the school...

most of my other dreams are extremely dark.. the dream I had tonight was just mellow.. but let's just say my thoughts are screwed up.. but I'm not scared of my dreams even the most violent ones,. and I mean extremely violent ones. guess my.... what's the word? serpresssed? memories like to come out in my lucid dreams. only time I can't hide them..
About the death thing, when you die your brain can stay active for up to 14 minutes and in dream time that can be infinite. That can be your afterlife.
I love that thought.
I'm not religious at all so any thought of afterlife didn't interest me until I heard that.

I heard this quote before.
"A dream is real while it lasts. Can we say more of life?"

When you think about it, reality is just perception with constraint, whereas dreams are perception without constraint.
Bloke came into school in year ten and explained all of this to our year. there are actually goggles that you can wear that activate during REM and flash red lights into your eyes, effectively appearing in your dream and allowing your subconcious to know that you're dreaming :D

pretty cool :D

My subconscious seems to be better at LDing than me. For several years now, I have had a zombie apocalypse dream almost once a week.

At some point, my dead brother decided to join me in the hunt - at that point I realised he is dead and should not be here (he was not dead in the dream) and I must be dreaming.

So from then on, every time I have a zombie dream, I instantly realise it's a dream and spend the time enjoying myself in the zombie destruction.

Also, I had a dream once where i was learning to fly a Black Hawk helicoprter, realised I was dreaming and decided the chopper is easier to pilot via Xbox controller. So I let go of the stick, pulled a controller from nowhere and continued flying the chopper.
I get lucid dreams, but they are always ended quickly once I realise that I'm in a dream.

Then I'm just stuck there with sleep paralysis. X_X
This subject intrigues me very much. I vaguely remember thinking that I had a lucid dream once but that was at least 5 years ago.

I used to get a number of recurring dreams including one where I would chase girls around a garden maze and another where I sat on the shoulder of a giant gorilla as we slid down a huge ice slide which was located in my pre-school. Pretty weird stuff. Also had one where I died or at least I think I did and it was like Bond-style where I got shot and my view was down a gun barrell with blood dripping down.

Not so much anymore though cant remember much of my dreams once I wake up.
I also read that they tests show that gamers have more lucid dreams than most people and they actually have Less nightmares because of the amount of time we are trained to take action (not many games where you run away). It might not work the same in the real world because there are consequences and danger we are aware of, but in our dreams all logic is thrown out the window. :P

Where did you read that?
They talked about it in Waking Life, I assumed it was true.
Googling around now, can't find much to support it...

EDIT: Apparently the brain can survive for 6 minutes without oxygen. So when your body shuts down and stops sending your brain oxygen your brain will be slowely dieing I guess for the next 6 minutes.

That's why people can be brought back to life and stuff.

Very interesting subject this, I've had a few near experiences with this sort of thing, mostly the recurring problem of waking upon the realization that I'm dreaming impedes it but one time two years ago I took complete control of a dream and forged the world to my will which was ****ing spectacular.

After about ten failed attempts to replicate the experience I gave up, this morning factor intrigues me though, I might give it another try sometime.

My regular dreams are pretty freaky though, I often have this one where I live in a share-house with 4 big grotesque monsters, except nothing "monstery" ever happens other than they keep breaking the furniture from time to time on account of them being huge, I asked them once why we don't get bigger furniture and they just gave me this weird look and went on with what they were doing, which is mostly just hanging around the house. One of them keeps doing something with account ledgers, the other three and I keep giving him shit for that lol.

But what are the chances you'd start dreaming in those circumstances? You might just have 6 minutes to realise you're dead =_=.
This is VERY interesting. Are you essentially saying you can control your dreams?
I can always tell when i'm dreaming, I don't do these tests at all. Mainly in nightmares, I know when i'm in a nightmare, so I can wake myself up out of them to avoid them. Just like normal dreams, if i'm in deep sleep, and i'm dreaming, I can easily control it because I always seem to know when i'm dreaming. I don't have to do these tests because there's always something about a dream that makes it seem, not right, that it isn't actually real.
The only time I can ever tell that I'm dreaming is when it's a nightmare (which is extremely rare), or when something bad is happening. Normally I don't wake up but upon realising that it's just a dream it just changes. I rarely ever remember my dreams though and when/if I do it's only small parts that I can remember.

For example last night my dream had something to do with smoking on my balcony, I don't remember who, why or even how it came about.
We're supposed to have something like 6-7 dreams every night, but most are forgotten by the time we wake up. I only remember 1 from last night where this guy kept distracting me at work, and I punched him but he kept coming back for more.
Meh gonna head off to work now... [Shifty]
i get the same feeling when i do acid.
I remember one time I was like some ultimate Pikachu and this massive thing was like killing my family and destroying my house etc... and I was like Pew pew pew and like destroyed it but it did feel like it was pretty real and that i was controlling it [Shifty] [Shifty] I want moar Lucid Dreams... It doesnt even feel like I have dreams these days >=( [Shifty]
Have you guys ever noticed more vivid dreams when you're hot? I often have some of the best during the summer months. It is really strange, I have no idea of what the relationship is.

Am I dreaming of a butterfly or is a butterfly just dreaming of me? [Shifty]
