Australia Day & The Australian Flag - LOCKED

Ray Martin - some of you may have heard of him... some of you may haven't - if you haven't i suggest you get some research done

Ray Martin has voiced his opinion that Australia needs a new flag - why? well because we don't really have anything to do with Great Briton anymore, Does that mean we really should get rid of the Union Jack out of our flag? i'd like to hear everyones opinions on this matter, Personally i don't think we should change our flag - it's pointless.

NOTE: this is a social topic - so theres no need for arguements or what not.

Happy Australia Day My360! just thought i'd pop online and say it to all of you hope you had a great day - off to play cricket

(by the way WHY WASNT TRHERE A AUSTRALIA DAY MEDAL? )

Gaetano said: Why not just take the Union Jack away, keep the Southern Cross and change the colours to green and gold - Yellow Flag with Green stars or vice-versa. No need to add a Kangaroo or anything.
The Union Jack doesn't represent Australia. We need our own identity and we need to pull away. I think it's the older generation that thinks we don't (my parents seem to think having a half-British flag is OK).
Maybe the Southern Cross with the Sun from the Aborigine Flag and a fushion of red, yellow and green?

I disagree, there are plenty of young people who want to keep the union jack, and it does represent part of Australia. Would I be right in assuming that you feel no connection to the union jack, because you are of non-anglo descent?
I agree mattc.

Even though I jokingly said "boxing kangaroo" for the flag earlier, the union jack does represent part of Australia.
And I will come out and say that I voted against the republic in the referendum. It's who we are what we stand for, proud of our history, even though some of it shaded.
This is the day our heritage should be remembered.

What i'm saying is we have flag etiquette!! You do not simply display another countries flag on a flag pole in any country. What is supposed to happen is you have the Australian flag above the American flag. It is disrespectful to your residing country.

All this "You're supposed to" crap is what shits me about patriotism the most. All these "rules" on how to show your pride and what to do and not do when involving your home country's colours.

I don't go around waving the Uruguayan flag around in public screaming "DIS BE MAH COUNTREH!". I'm not that much of a moron. But if I have a little Uruguayan flag on my car and someone like you comes along and tells me to take it down OR put an Australian flag on top of it, they shouldn't act surprised if I call them a Nazi.

As Magooley said, its a multicultural country now. Its not the early 1900's anymore. People should be allowed to display their nation's colours without fear of persecution.

Yes, you are right in what you are saying.
But, when it comes to proper flag use, you may fly your native country flag but it must respect the protocol of the country you are using it in. Thus, not disrespecting your national/other flag in the country you are in.

ohh geez, this is what stuffs me around. So you calling me a Nazi for having pride, respecting protocol? Australians have pride we get called Nazis, charming. It's an Australian day thread but I should have no input because i support protocol. Good day to you sir. I didn't think that i would get laughed at for supporting my country, I didn't think my opinion on this site would be so invalid.

I'm from Norway and its your thinking that has persuaded me to take down my Australian flag and put up the Norwegian flag why not right? Who cares what country i'm living in.

Don't quote me or anything, but what I think Raro is getting at is the semi-private displays of heritage. Which I kinda agree with.

But I also agree with you in that the country that you currently reside in doesn't come second (or first) to your parents home.

Kind of a touchy issue. And no one is really right. And its relatively fruitless if either side was to 'win'.

I think it has also become really touchy because of all the segregation of races throughout Australia at the moment.

I'm a proud Mauritian and will not feel obliged to fly both flags (if either) at a time. But if someone was to have a go at me for not respecting which country I am currently live in, I would understand that aswell.

Multicultrualism needs to be embraced with open arms or not at all. You can't have people from all walks of life come to live within a block of each other and all live by one societies set of rules.

Leeway needs to be given and earnt.
A translation of what Raro said (For Mario) - Anyone should have the choice to fly either the Australian flag or the flag of the country in which they were born. Now, depending on how long they have been in the country, they may want to fly both.

Having said this, it should only be one (or two) standard flags, don't have a 50x50m sign saying "I AM AMERICAN, **** YOU ALL", because that would just be moronic.
I actually agree with you Sevenll. But I just don't believe he should of accused anyone of being a Nazi, and that is a serious allegation, which should not be tolerated. It was clear it was intentionally aimed at me.

It's far from the truth and extrememly ignorant to think I don't tolerate other nationalities. I mean what the? No one gets persecuted for displaying pride for their country of origin but since we are Australian citizens I believe we should respect this countries protocols and laws. We all have backgrounds but I live here, I enjoy this land so why not show pride? If i live in Norway I would display the Norwegian flag.

We enforce the Law on issues and we get called racists that is extremely sad. I cannot believe that comment at all.
I getcha now, Raro was speaking of a fairly rare(o) example.

I doubt anyone, who isn't already overtly patriotic, would go out of their way to actually make someone change a simple flag arrangement.

Hypotheticals can get a bit out of hand I guess lol.
One hour later and I'm crying of laughter from janeys post!
I think we should **** the British flag bit off and it should be like this.
