So we've been talking about how F.E.A.R 3 is lacking on the scares, and I started to remember about some of the scariest games I've played.

Of course it changes depending on how old you are, but I remember Resident Evil 2 scaring the crap out of me when I was a kid.

Another would have to be the original F.E.A.R, along with Condemned: Criminal Origins who were both made by the same company.

What are some of the scariest games you've ever played. Silent Hill 2 was definitely frightening at the time.

Add another vote for Amnesia: The Dark Descent...THAT GAME.
It always keeps you on edge thinking 'Gee, I sure hope X senario doesn't happen'...It fills your head with horrific possibilities because of the atmosphere. Then guess what it does....NOTHING. It keeps your mind on the edge so far you start to tense your shoulder muscles walking around corners. And usually (for me) just around the time you start to ease up a little the game just does something SO unexpected...SO horrific that you just freak out and make all the mistakes when confronted with danger it wants you to make!

(Without wanting to spoil too much) Probably the best example of this is the morgue section of the game:

Didn't want to go into those other rooms in the morgue? If what your 'objective' in the morgue isn't bad enough SURELY this game wouldn't make you go into those other rooms...

'THE HELL YOU AREN'T.' Says the game. :P

I actually prefered The Penumbra series over Amnesia. Penumbra is what Frictional Games made before Amnesia: The dark descent. Although it isn't as scary the overall theme, atmosphere and story was much better than Amnesia. My favourite game series to date and still a VERY scary game.

It's fake? Phew! That was terrifying. And you're looking at someone who's seen every scary horror movie and video on the Internet. One of the last videos when the Ben and Matt save files came up, I stopped watching. My name is Matt and I thought for sure it was a sign or something lol. Turns out the guys name was apparently Matt too :P

I was SUPER excited to play Sadness. It was a Wii game set in the early 1900s that was entirely black and white, and a team of Polish psychiatrists were apparently helping to write the story. Rather than being a combat laden horror game it was more about messing with your mind. Sadly the game was never released :(

Yeah I was looking forward to Sadness too.

And yes, the Haunted Majora's Mask story was part of a now-defunct ARG. It was a tiny bit obvious, but it was very well done. jadusable.wikia.com/... I should add that there are lots of accounts of game cartridges being tampered with, like the story of the hacked Pokemon 'Black' cartridge . Also, hilarious comments in that link.

I'd love to see a game like that make it to the HD consoles - I guess Alan Wake WANTED to be a psychological horror title and while I actually REALLY enjoyed that game, it just didn't pull it off for me.
