Theres no way that we, as gamers, can play everything that's released. A lot of the time we are very aware that a game is coming out, but we express no interest in it untill it's been released. You may have heard excellent things about it that make you want to try it for yourself. Perhaps the game was so highly anticipate, you feel compelled as a gamer to give it a go and make your own assessment.

I've been guilty of this. I was not hyped for a few games last year, games that were getting a lot of people excited. One example is Skyrim. I had played Oblivion once and I didn't really enjoy it at all. I knew that the Elder Scrolls series was very popular amongst it's die hard fans (go figure) and that the announcement of Skyrim got lots of people pumped. I had no intention of playing this game, let alone paying for it. I don't like to admit that, if I had not gotten a free copy (I won a competition late last year) I probably would have never played it.

I'm not a huge RPG guy (Pokemon being te main exception) so I didn't think it'd appeal to me. Since I was given a free copy, and since everyone was praising it, I decided to play it for an hour or two. That first play went for at least 10 hours. I was so happy that I gave it a go, it's really such a great game.

My experience with Skyrim has taught me to give more games a try (the same with movies and books/comics). I kndd of see it as, since such a large majority of gamers talk something up,maybe you should try to give it a go if you don't already have a decided opinion of your own. That's not to say that you'll love (or even like) a game just because lots of other people do (I still don't very much care for mass effect), but it won't hurt to try it once, judge it on your own terms, and then make the choice of whether you'd like to invest more hours into the completion of the game.

I'd love to know if anyone else has had any similar experiences.
I guess team fortress 2. I'm not a multiplayer fan AT ALL but when I played it I loved it, I play it every now and again. Really enjoy i, I still don't like co-op games though I haven't found one I love yet

Not even Portal? That's another game I didn't plan on loving. I bought Portal 2 on a whim and l-l-loved it!
DayZ.

Didn't expect to like it, let alone absolutely love it. Arma 2 has been on of my best purchases this year and I havent even played it beyond the dayZ mod. Seriously, it's such an adventure!

I'll second that.

Minecraft is another. I'd consider myself a 'serious gamer' for the most part. Intricate stories, character depth, and leveling systems and all that. If something looks bright and giddy, I generally over-look it.

Great point with Minecraft. But looking at all the red stone contraptions people make, I would say despite its casual appeal, Minecraft attracts some of the industry's most hardcore players.

Also, mods like the hunger games complete the game! Got an article coming on that one today. Great post sev!
Diablo III. I came in thinking I was going to be frustrated with the controls and become bored with the plot but I found myself to be enjoying it quite immensely. Yay for Blizzard now catering to us simple folk. [Derp]

Oh, and Minecraft too. Although, I had a bittersweet ending with it.
I always thought i wouldnt like minecraft and then i realized how awesome it was

I build crappy buildings for this reason. Titles you didnt expect to love/you got caught up in the hype of No loss if a creeper/griefer gets to it.
Skyrim.

Oblivion was even more boring year 9 maths.
Oblivion. Wasn't keen on getting a copy, but decided to and loved it.

New Vegas. I was never interested in the Fallouts but I bought it because it was cheap and is awesome.
Eufloria on iPad. Holy shit I play that game for hours and I don't even realise.
Nier. Expected to hate it from all the negativeness directed towards it, played it and found it was one of the few games that really immersed me in its story and had me glued to my screen until the end.
I guess for me it would be all these years ago when I first bought our PS3.

The two huge games that summer were COD4 and Assassins Creed and frankly I thought that I would be all over AC like a rash.
Realistically I had bought COD4 for Richie and AC for myself and what ended up happening was as much of a surprise to Richie as it was to myself.

I became hooked on COD4 :P

Since then I have been a Cod fangirl of sorts. I've enjoyed every game and loved playing through all the single player campaigns, even to the point of going through and making sure I veteran all the levels.

I know the franchise cops a lot of crap but it's still and always will be pretty damn awesome in my eyes, lol.
super pokemon rumble. I didn't like the look of it at all and picked it up at DSE for $25 just to give it a shot and absolutely loved it!
Zelda Ocarina of Time.
I only picked it up when the 3DS version came out cause i was never a huge zelda fan.
But holy shit, i love Zelda games now.
I've made it my mission to try and play games I normally wouldn't this year, and thus far I've had excellent results.

First of all I picked up Diablo 3 which I expected to hate, simply because I didn't care for the first 2 and I fell in love instantly.

Magic: The Gathering, Krater, WoW, all games I normally wouldn't have touched are now getting a heavy rotation when I have some gaming time on my hands.

It's good to branch out, give something new a try once in a while.

I couldn't agree more
My friend introduced me to Counter-Strike 1.5, it was back then. Being a Nintendo-exclusive player, I really had no interest, and his attempt to sell me this mindless bloodfest fell on deaf ears.

Buuuut, I gave it a go, and naturally loved it. Actually got me into P.C gaming.

wow, this must have been nearly 10 years back...
Ocarina of Time. Played it. Loved it. Made love to it. Have multiple copies of it. Multiple orgasms. [MOG]

Pretty much back tracked and found nearly all of the originals.
