The end of EB Games?

The fact of the matter is that the court has opened up a big honking loophole that publishers -- who we all know would love to KILL the used game market -- will send their legal departments into overdrive to try to exploit if at all possible.

I mean, if it wasn't the death of the used-game market that killed off game retailers, it would eventually be digital distribution, but still, what do we all think about this?
EBgames - www.ebgames.com.au/...

Zavvi - www.zavvi.com/... (by the way that's $41.34 AUD)

I need not say anymore.

Meh.......... Nothing New.........

I like, MOST people want a hard copy.......

Game stores will still be around when they dig me a hole and throw me in it.......... I only buy hard copies, so I can trade them, sell them or frisbee them out to sea if I please.........

Once companies turn to online distribution only the fast freefall plummet in sales will quickly make them change their strategy and a return to hard copies will ensure.......
If the retailers are gone, how are developers/publishers going to sell their overpriced CE/LE's? :O :P

30 years ago, people preferred pen and paper to a computer.

15 years ago, people preferred filing cabinets instead of a computer.

See what I did there?

You really, REALLY think, that in 15 years time when we have 100TB HDD selling for $50, that people would prefer a hard copy over a digital copy? Really? I think many people prefer a hard copy now, but that won't stop digital. Look at photos, movies. The success of iTunes, XBOX Live and PSN Movies. Streaming movie rentals in the US. The same will happen with games. The only thing stopping digital distribution to take hold now is:

A. Storage
B. Download quotas

Both of those will be solved in the near future. People "prefer" hard copies because it's essentially all they have - many people don't have another option atm (can't afford big internet or big HDD). So there is no other option. Once the two above become accessible and cheap enough (which they will), digital distribution will thrive.

The only thing holding me back from going 100% digital is the storage options. I have a 200GB download quota, which is enough for me to download 5-10 XBLA games, several movies off itunes, an ENTIRE TV series, and then STILL have something like 130 GB to mess around with. Even more. However, all I have for storage is a 350GB HDD, my iPod and my two Macs. Combined storage of around 700GB. I need 3TB to be happy atm.
Agreed
can the gaming industry find something else to complain about already, the whole 2nd hand games = bad thing is getting annoying
id have to agree with Gaetano on everything. I myself like hard copies, i have over 500 dvds, all store bought. I have over 15 Xbox games, all hard copies bought from stores/auctions. Although when the time comes where u can download games and storing them rather than having hard copies, i will be sadly enough, never be buying a hard copy game/dvd again. :'@

I'm actually in the process of ripping all my DVDs into digital AVI's. I just need a massive HDD. Once I have that, I'll have a substantial amount of extra room in my pad.

People still use pens and paper. See what I did there?

DD will grow but it won't grow is such a way that it will kill the hard copy market. If there is a big enough market for the hard copy distribution, it will be available.

Maybe in 10 years DD will be bigger than hard copy (in some ways and products, it is) but for that to be the only way to purchace a game? I doubt it.

I prefer to buy HD movies from itunes/XBLMP/PSN but I will always prefer hard copy games.

lol of course people still use pen and paper. lulz. But would someone writing a 200,000 word novel prefer a pen and paper or a computer? I most definitely think a computer. You might get some loon still living in the 50s who thinks he is romantic for writing in pen and paper, but the point I was making is that, if people have the choice, they're going to choose a computer over a pen and paper to write a document. It was just an example.

The same will be said for digital distribution. It's being pushed far too aggressively to not have some sort of impact. Do you really think a distributor is going to fork out cash to manufacturer 100,000 DVD cases for a DVD, when the digital copy is going to sell more? The number will eventually dwindle, to a point where digital is the one and only way. It will happen in the next 15 years. Once we start seeing "iTunes exclusives" and "Online-online content" (which we already are) you know it's on the way up.

Compare XBOX Live and PSN to the same services three years ago. The number of digital titles has increased quite dramatically. People laughed when Bill Gates said digital distribution will be the main form of media distribution, and it's slowly becoming a reality.

I'm not saying it's going to happen. But there will be point, I think within the next two decades (that's 20 YEARS! THINK TO WHERE TECHNOLOGY WAS 20 YEARS AGO! 1990!), where digital distribution is the one and only way. The only thing holding it back now is, as I said, storage and quotas. Once it's essentially effortless to buy, the market will adapt. The digital aspect is working fine. But those two elements need to continue to grow, particularly in Australia, for it to become mainstream. And that WILL happen. Once it does, everything will be online.
eb prices are horrible ahahaha. Just look at the pricing for their cod franchise. COD 4 is still like $50 (I saw it for $99 last year), W@W is also around that price and MW2 is going for $99. Heck Black Ops standard edition is $118. $118!? wth are they thinking?

The inability to trade in PC games due to online user registration makes this argument moot for PC gamers. I used to like getting hard copies too, until I realised I was paying literally 150-200% more at the store than I would on Steam, and I wouldn't be able to get rid of the game anyway.

BUT YOU DON'T HAVE THE HARD COPY ANYMORE!

Once online versions start dropping price and selling for considerably less than the hard copy counterparts, their opinions will change. Who is going to buy a $100 game, when they can download it for $60? Plastic is not going to appreciate over the years, and unless you have a super-dooper limited edition that MIGHT appreciate, you will have no other choice but to get a digital copy, unless you want to pay almost double the price. But it won't even get to that. Once online copies start selling at half the price, you can wave goodbye to hard versions.
They should shut it down FOREVER!
I'm happy with the hard copies. Makes me feel cooool
I'll prefer hard copies for a while yet.
I purchased MW2 for $78 a year ago and just traded it towards dead rising 2 for $75 value. Hard Copy FTW!

That's exactly what I was saying. :S
Hard copies ftw. Can also take it to my mates house to play + trade in values and resale.

Digital should be used for some things, such as music and movies etc, but I prefer games in hard copy form.
I'm inpressed with xbox live.. I only found out today you could buy games like batman and crackdown etc straight onto your hard drive.. On my old net plan I was stressing about DD cause I was on a 4 gb month plan.. Now Im going on a 100gb plan so I'm pumped!! Bring on the DD!! Nothing better then not having to get up and change the game disc...
