Besides that, they've found a way to please both fanbases (old and new/2D and 3D) of Sonic now, by having this engine that combines both 2D and 3D gameplay to get the best of both worlds of Sonic, which isn't at all an easy thing to do. When you've got two fanbases to please with one series for just about each game It's very difficult.
I wont disagree that there were a handful of 3D games that were excuted poorly, but I think that's partly due to Sega trying to for all these years find a formula to get Sonic right in (notice how the gameplay changed completely just about every game from Heroes until unleashed), and also bad decisions on Segas parts with alot of them. But anyway, I don't think they were awful or alot alot of them were that bad, I found alot of them quite fun despite their flaws, but that's just me and my opinion.
