I have to agree, they don't look that great on profiles when they're bigger than their regular size, as the quality is reduced.

My guess is, that it's for guests. So they can familiarize themselves with what the thread is about.

I'm not sure Westy but I think Tia posted last week about it saying that if someone comes onto the site it will start from the beginning of the thread so they now what the thread/rules are about.
