Capcom's One-Save - Thoughts?

Buying used video games is great for gamers who don't want to pay full price for the latest hits. You know who doesn't like used video games? Game publishers. In a very sad twist, Capcom's fighting back against the second-hand game market with a game that can only support one save file — for life.

It's been confirmed that Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS is a game that once finished, cannot be reset for complete replay. According to both the U.S. and U.K. game's instruction manual "saved data on this software cannot be reset."

Basically what Capcom has done is make Mercenaries 3D a one-time play affair. Once you've unlocked all the goodies and played the entire game, you will not be able to erase the game's save data and start fresh as if it were a new copy. Consider this: lending Mercenaries 3D to a friend, a little brother or sister will be worthless because they'll only be able to continue playing the game with your saved settings and create their own.

We get that game publishers don't make any money off sales from used video games, but killing off the ability to hit the reset button is just taking things too far. It's like saying Upperdeck is entitled to a cut in my autographed Michael Jordan basketball card I sold at a garage sale for $10,000 some 25 years after I bought it.

While it can be argued that used video game sales are actually more damaging than piracy, it's still a lowball move for Capcom to make, especially with a franchise as large and significant as the Resident Evil series. Will other publishers follow in Capcom's footsteps to take a stand against the lucrative market of used video games? We really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Now, spill your thoughts!
ill still be getting it

they certainly do

Debatable. They made a lot of classic games on previous generations, but they've been extremely hit and miss this gen.
From the news article response:

The retailer is doing it in it's own best interests. The product is not faulty, and it does exactly as it is intended. The save functionality does not compromise the experience -- it only compromises a consumers ability to re-sell the product.

EB are quite selfish in this stance imo.

They are boycotting to benefit themselves. This has nothing to do with the gamer. They did the same thing with the PSPGo. They see no way to make as big a profit on the sale as they'd like, so they boycott. It's ridiculous and selfish. Australian retailers in general are whining brats. See Mr. Norman.
Isn't every business selfish?

That's very true, but I think Capcom is being just as selfish.
why would eb games not boycott it? they're a business,a and as a business they want to do what will give them the most profit. im not saying they are selfish, im saying they're just doing what their main goal is, and thats to make a profit. they make most of their money from preowneds, not brand new stock.
I like how Australians already have to pay close to twice the amount our American counterparts do and we still get stuck with this.

It's quite laughable actually. Next news headline we read about capcom will be them filing for bankruptcy...

Yeh thats why my most anticipated game from capcom is the hd collection of code veronica and resident evil 4
As others have reported this is not the first game on the 3DS that has this though. I see a post now in the news as well on this site saying the same.

The following games also have the same restriction

Super Monkey Ball 3D, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2
I knew this was going to happen, and quite frankly I think it's a load of BS! This means families can't share the same games as if my brother starts playing it and then I want a go, I'm going to ruin his save game and I'll miss out on parts of the game.

But...the developer/publisher have no obligation to the retailer. They can sell their product any number of ways, and the objective of a retailer is to provide a product for the consumer. EB Games still make a profit on selling the product...they just don't make THAT much of a profit.

If they were selling them at a loss, fair enough, but I don't think any product is sold at a loss. That would defeat the purpose of having retail and distributors (middle man). How would retail survive?

EB Games screwing the consumer in this instance, purely for its own benefit. Not all retailers would do this.
Yeah it's a load of BS. It should be the consumers choice to boycott the product, if EB really wanted to be helpful they should make sure consumers are aware of the system before they purchase, rather than removing it from store shelves entirely.
i agree but oh well looks like ill get it at another store
Games retailers have been rorting us for years - id rather my money go to the developers than the retailers.

I am SO ok with Capcom doing this - i am happy to buy a game brand new if i want it and rarely get used games.

The war has begun.
for me if effectively screws the replayability of the game, imagine if you couldn't prestige in COD and challenge yourself by starting from scratch

There's plenty of replayability there. And it's a different game -- COD dictates that replayability of a particular aspect. RE is meant to be played in a linear fashion, heading in one direction towards the end. There's no reason to replay a mission unless you've finished the game first.

but what if I want to play through and unlock everything again?
Yeah but I'm thinking from a families point of view who IMO are the most likely to have a 3DS. They buy one to share between the kids, and both of them want one game. Instead of being able to buy one copy for them both to share they will have to fork out the $$ for two copies. That is BS.
Well im definetly ****ed.

I'm pretty sure you can...
Why is that?
Imagine playing a Bioware RPG game on the 3DS. LOL.
