Capcom's One-Save - Thoughts?

Buying used video games is great for gamers who don't want to pay full price for the latest hits. You know who doesn't like used video games? Game publishers. In a very sad twist, Capcom's fighting back against the second-hand game market with a game that can only support one save file — for life.

It's been confirmed that Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS is a game that once finished, cannot be reset for complete replay. According to both the U.S. and U.K. game's instruction manual "saved data on this software cannot be reset."

Basically what Capcom has done is make Mercenaries 3D a one-time play affair. Once you've unlocked all the goodies and played the entire game, you will not be able to erase the game's save data and start fresh as if it were a new copy. Consider this: lending Mercenaries 3D to a friend, a little brother or sister will be worthless because they'll only be able to continue playing the game with your saved settings and create their own.

We get that game publishers don't make any money off sales from used video games, but killing off the ability to hit the reset button is just taking things too far. It's like saying Upperdeck is entitled to a cut in my autographed Michael Jordan basketball card I sold at a garage sale for $10,000 some 25 years after I bought it.

While it can be argued that used video game sales are actually more damaging than piracy, it's still a lowball move for Capcom to make, especially with a franchise as large and significant as the Resident Evil series. Will other publishers follow in Capcom's footsteps to take a stand against the lucrative market of used video games? We really hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Now, spill your thoughts!
What a crock of shite. Half the fun is once you've finished a game, you can go back to it a few months later and play it again (if it's a good game of course)

I'll be boycotting any games with that feature! [Rage]
One save, does this mean that you can use another disc to access your save originating from another disc though?

so like one save can be created per disc, but can be edited by any disc.

the only way to play it again by the sounds of it is if you buy the game again

It's a 3DS game. Saves are stored on the cart.
E: Scratch that, it's apparently stored on the SD card =/

Hmm, should have read that.

I guess its not a big deal then, I've had games where you can only have one save, not because of copy protection but because of data capacity.
Its better than continue codes X_X
Doubt it's saves are going to be saved onto the 3DS SD card...

No resetting of the one save

True.. But still.. pathetic, because one persons replay value of the game they bought is different to selling it to another gamer for their own use. I love playing my games over and over.. to get the trophies and such.. So this will fail slightly in my eyes [Facepalm]

Please explain to me how this will change the trophies etc?

Silence said it's stored on the SD card, what? 3DS cart is an SD card?
If the idea was to come across to PS3 and 360, its would ruin the game before it hit the shops.. I wasnt talking about gameboys or DS's or what ever the kids call them these days.. -_-
It could be the start of something big where we cant trade anymore.. Highly unlikely though!
Just my humble opinion though.. Opinions are like aarseholes, everyone has one but you never like to hear anyone elses.. [Shifty]
I suggest not buying the game at all. What if they started doing this with other games? When they go retro you'll never be able to replay the game again. Silly idea.

If you replay it to get trophies. What difference does it make if you're only getting the ones you missed before?

Opinions are like armpits..Yours stink and mine smell like Rexona.
what do you mean?

Nice analogy [Facepalm]

.....................

You can still play it from the start and do what you need to do to get the trophies.

Seriously though I think it's a crap idea. I see their point, but they are going to make more enemies than friends. It's like the Carbon Tax, it will cost Gillard her job, but it's somewhat a good idea.
Platinum mate.. some games need ALL trophies to be collected to attain such privileges.! This requires playing through a game more than once. [WTF]

Delinquent said:Seriously though I think it's a crap idea. I see their point, but they are going to make more enemies than friends

Agreed! Its bogus and just not fair to the consumer.
You can still play through the game more than once. You can play through it as many times as you like, just collect what you missed the first time. [WTF]
I guess it really doesn't matter with this game. It's just Mercenaries. There's no story to play through.
WTF [WTF]

This is the most bullshit thing in the history of the games industry. Publishers are meddling way too much. It's not just meddling, its goddam autocratic. They aren't happy with losing sales because people are trading their used games? Then put more effort into your games so that there's less chance that people will get rid of them. Buying a game is like buying any other entertainment goods, you pay to own it and enjoy it as long as you like. If you end up selling it second hand, who should face the negative effects of that? You, the customer who supported their company in the first place, or the company, for not making a product that's good enough to make you want to keep it?

What would happen if fishing rod companies decided they weren't making enough money because too many people were selling their old rods at garage sales? The idea of a fishing rod expiring after a certain time is ridiculous, just as ridiculous as a game only being playable once.

Heck, how many times have you guys replayed Ocarina of Time on your N64? Would OoT be considered the best game of all time if people had to buy the game every time they wanted to play it? I doubt so.... :(
Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS is a game that once finished, cannot be reset for complete replay.

You can still play it, just that everything will be unlocked already. Meaning for the new player it's somewhat worthless.
i hope other developers dont follow this [Rage].. I just hope capcom realise this may be massive FML...
Oh if this happened to RE: Revelations whenever that comes out im gonna [Rage]. its just mercenaries only diff is you can run and gun and other feats eh... i have Zelda oot to occupy for the meantime
WORST CONCEPT EVER!!!

I mean seriously this would just make the game more of a waste of money if anything unless this game is up to LoZ:OoT standards which I doubt then I won't be shelling out my $70+ for something that can only be played once.

Its stupid treads like this that make people want to pirate certain games, apart from not announcing if there is a Shooting Star Rockman 4 this is a horrible move by CAPCOM.
> Implying that the Mercenaries series is worth paying attention to.
