Has Torchlight II Committed Commercial Suicide?

Release day; a day where every developer, big or small, stays up all night watching the numbers roll in as they have an indication whether their latest project has been a success or failure. Did they do enough marketing? Is their brand strong enough? Was the timing right?

Timing is often where a number of developers have their biggest misstep. I think back to May 18, 2010 when Microsoft's Alan Wake, an Xbox 360 exclusive, launched in the same week as Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption, a massive game spread across two platforms that was always going to sell through the roof.

One game reigned supreme, one game fell into obscurity. We can't rely on "what if" scenarios, but I can't help but feel Alan Wake would have fared a little better if the timing was just right, something that the PC community proved two years later.

After months of delays Runic Games is on the verge of launching Torchlight II, an excellent ARPG that deserves appraise from gamers of all genres. While it dodged a gigantic bullet earlier this year by the name of Diablo 3, I can't help but feel they are committing commercial suicide by launching the same day as Gearbox's Borderlands 2.

Fans of the ARPG genre or the Torchlight series would have placed their money down for one of the most anticipated PC games of the year, and their purchasing habits aren't what concern me. It's the thoughts and opinions of the general gaming public that could prove to be worrisome for Runic.

Torchlight is an indie title, and while it has a decent following, it can't compare to a Game of The Year franchise. Borderlands has become cemented in gaming culture; a title with fanatical fans, deep lore and community videos that splash across the front pages of gaming sites across the globe. You can't buy that kind of exposure and that's definitely going to pose a threat on Thursday when both games are released.

Perhaps the most important deterrent for most general gamers will be accessibility. Borderlands 2 is a shooter with RPG elements at the centre, and while a lot of gamers don't like RPGs, it seems that the majority of people love shooters. When Borderlands 2 boasts hundreds of weapons, 40 hour plus campaign and more things to kill than a Call of Duty marathon, it's going to be hard to sway those gamers into thinking a point-and-click dungeon crawler is really going to entertain them just as much.

Before you get outraged let's just remember I'm talking about general gamers here, the type who buy Call of Duty every year and think that the guy with the green outfit and sword's name is Zelda. I'm not trying to slur the great name of Torchlight II either, in fact I've been playing it over the weekend to get ready for this week's review and it's already one of my favourite releases of 2012.

I just hope we're not faced with another "What if" scenario when it tried to stand toe-to-toe with what seems like an unstoppable force in Borderlands 2.

Has Torchlight II Committed Commercial Suicide? Comments

Personally, I'm not so sure that it has committed commercial suicide. Surely they know they are going up against one of this years biggest games. And being that it's developed for a different group of gamers I think it'll do quite well.
Those who are fans of both series of games will surely buy both. They might play one more than the other, but I'm not so sure that sales will be affected all too much. They will be affected that's a definite, but as to how much, well we shall see next week.
Travis Baldree who is working on Torchlight II had this to say in response when I tweeted out this article:

@MMGN @heller_mmgn I think we're gonna be OK :) Presales have been amazing, and we released TL1 the same week as the original Borderlands.
So no TL3 until Borderlands 3 comes out, huh?
For $20 how can it? -_-
A thoughtful article. Borderlands will wipe the floor of most things for weeks to come.
not everyone likes fps and not everyone like ARPG's, i really think they will both do well

i for one will be getting torchlight l & ll
i was so keen for tl2 but it has taken way longer to release than it should of (imo xD) and now on the same day as bl2? im getting bl2 but not this now
You've got to release it at some point. If you move it to another date you're just as likely to come up against a different juggernaut.
Nah I'm with you on this Heller. There has been plenty of gaps this year that would have been more suitable. This will probably do them some damage.

Maybe it wasn't ready yet in those said gaps. [Shifty]
$20 game that has a high chance of demolishing D3...

Wouldn't they just haemorrhage money the longer they waited?
I doubt it - in comparison to directly competing with a game that will demolish it at least. I'm hardly the most responsible with money when it comes to buying games; yet even I would not buy two games on the same day. I would make the choice as to which i want to play more and buy that. Torchlight didn't impress me at all so it will be second choice, and despite the new game looking much improved, it would need to be in a gap of time where we were looking for a game to play. Say in 2 weeks time or so.
I pre-ordered T2 a looooooong time ago. I don't see how owning one excludes the other.
I'm not saying that it's excludes the other. I'm saying that a majority of gamers on launch day who are browsing Steam, looking for a new game to buy this week, will most likely choose BL2 as an uninformed decision. Why? Because Borderlands is a huge deal these days and most people have heard of it, and it's a shooter first, RPG second.

Baldree says they launched alongside Borderlands last time and they will be fine, however Borderlands is far more popular than it was when the first game released, simply because people know to expect quality.
I think it's mainly the time factor.

I didn't really play Sleeping Dogs because it came out on the same day as Darksiders 2. Just wasn't enough time.

That doesn't really stop you buying both though.
TL2 *_*BL2 on ps3 my pc is safe
