To hell with playing Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII...TWWWWWOOOO!

Insulting the ridiculous name, which apparently makes complete sense, is the most enjoyment FFXIII-2 will offer me. It’s got nothing to do with the game itself, I just can’t be bothered playing it.

Two copies arrived in our office recently, and even the choice of Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 was too much to think about. Starting a new RPG is a daunting proposition and I’m just not ready to make that type of commitment.

Truth be told, I’m not the biggest Final Fantasy fan. I don’t mind the occasional game, but I certainly haven’t played all of them, or even most. Come to think of it, I doubt I’ve even finished one of them.

Final Fantasy just doesn’t entice me like other JRPGs. But even that isn’t the reason I’m hesitant to begin Final Fantasy XIII-2.

There are just two many other things to play, backlogged from 2011, that the very thought of starting a massive RPG overwhelms me. I also haven’t played Final Fantasy XIII the first.

Normally playing sequels without the original title isn’t a big deal in video games. It’s not like you’re going into The Empire Strikes back without having seen A New Hope. However, the dual numerical title suggests just that.

If it were Final Fantasy 14, I would go in cold. Final Fantasy XIII TWO! tells me that I need to have played the first game.

Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

I have no idea how accurate that is. Maybe I’m way off, but this is why marketing people exist. If the first game isn’t a prerequisite, someone should have flagged that either at the naming stage, or to make it abundantly clear during the Western promotions.

I’ve still got Skyrim to return to, and I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t quite finished Skyward Sword. Then there is the long-delayed Australian release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. If I’m any chance of allowing myself to become engrossed in such an epic MMO, I can’t be spending half my life on a new RPG first.

I’m sure Final Fantasy XIII-TWO! would be a rewarding experience, but frankly, I just can’t be bothered with such a intimidating task.

That’s right, Mum, now I’m too lazy to even play a video game.

is it open world?

Pretty unlikely. FF games are pretty much "open world" but you still have to complete tasks in-order most of the time.

I would have delved into FFXIII-2 but the reviews are painting it as good but not-as-good-as Xenoblade. And since i havent finished that yet, im trying not to add anymore games to my back-catalog (which is getting a bit too lengthy). [WTF]
I'm prettysure if someone were to play this without having played FFXIII they'd understand most of the story, as it's told and shown through two characters that in the original had no actual relevance (well one's the whole reason the gang set out on their journey, but excluding that) You'll miss a few refferences here and there but you'd still get most of it.

It's apparently alot more 'open world' than the original was, with alot of places to explore and lots of things to do.
13-2 story has nothing to do with the first one. This one is about a bunch of time paradoxes that will lead to the end of the world and stuff while the first one was about saving Serah that was crystallized by a fal'cie for not completing her mission.

Seriously, you can easily play the second one without knowing crap about the first one. Obviously some fan-service like seeing old characters like Snow and Hope as adults in the future will not have the same effect on you as someone that knows the characters from the first game but is not big deal.
At least Lightning's outfit has become more practical.

The first one was absolutely ridiculous, of Rikku of FFX proportions.
Well then, don't play it.

serah didnt fail her mission. she completed her i'cle mission that why she turned to crystal..
but yeah u cant judge a game with out playing it .. i for one love this game and yes i did like the first and this game is great
Lovin' this game, atm :D
lol. that time of the month Ben - nice rant. I think if you've got someone who reasonably likes JRPG and especially the final fantasy name they may very well enjoy this.

In saying that, FF XIII apparently was really slow to get into and and so I'm hesitant to get into. I've got FFXIII right here and that's stopping me right now :P

thinking of another FF spin off X-2 was such a departure from FFX that if people didn't enjoy that then may have ill feelings towards this game too though that's a bit harsh.

I totally agree that starting any RPG you really need to invest some time into it and totally agree that if you have no time to spare, picking this game up now is probably not something worth doing.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is shit. I have tried it. Its like playing an average version of world of warcraft with no players online and more bugs.

Skyrim doesn't compare to ffxiii-2 so their ya go lots of free time

Probably because they're different kinds of games altogether?

I actually find Rikku one of the hottest FF chicks. And I thought Lightning was hot too. We must have different tastes.
We must.

I prefer my women to be a legal age.

What a pointless waste time =D

Whether they are attractive or not, their outfits are still impractical, then again most of the outfits are.

-_-
Final Fantasy VIII must be a sequel to VII! [note: sarcasm]
Final Fantasy 14 or XIV is a completely different "fantasy" and takes place as a MMORPG. Every Square-Enix change the roman numeral at the end of Final Fantasy, it is to indicate a new "fantasy".

It's funny that someone working with videogames would have such little knowledge of such a long running and successful series.

Ben, can I have your job. :P
@key2sanity OK... that doesn't make any sense. XIV = Different fantasy than XIII or XV. But is it a different "fantasy" when it's XIV - 2? I don't have any idea (or Ben, apparently). That's the problem here.

Personally, the length of these "massive RPG's" is more of a deterrent than it is a pro. Heck, I've been afraid of starting Majora's Mask, that's how little I want to get into a game. These days I leave at six and get back at six; I have little time to get into home console games. If I'm getting into an RPG (or game longer than 20 hours), it'll probably be on the 3DS. (evil)
10 outta 10 for this!!! *_*

I honestly think he was just pointing out the ostentatiousness of the title sequences, and rightfully so.

XIII-2 doesn't sound ridiculous to you? They could have called it Final Fantasy XIII - A New Hope, or some shit like that.
What a waste of 2 minutes of my life. Why didn't you just say 'I don't know much about this game, haven't played the others, couldn't really tell you a thing about it but I have heaps more other games to play so I cbf playing this'?

Article for the sake of article.

To hell with playing Final Fantasy XIII-2

Seriously?
Yeah man, seriously. There's some real good articles on here over the past little while, this just seems like a purposeless rant for the sake of it - hardly a featured article.
I understand that, but two minutes of your life?
Is that seriously worth complaining about?
Yes, my time is precious, dammit. But two minutes wasn't really my complaint. Rather that this uninspired, unhelpful, unremarkable and downright boring "article" fails to contribute anything, to anyone, at all. Just my opinion. Carry on!

What he's saying is it takes on a new numeral format when it's a new Final Fantasy game not at all related to the numbered one before it, and therefore takes on a new roman nemeral. If it's not, like Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 it'll have a number added to the originals number.

To be honest, I thought it was a pretty simple concept to work out lol.

I see.

Fair enough.
I have no idea what the story is about..
Can't wait to see what everyone says when they bring out FFXIII-3. LOL. :P
Just pass it over already Ben :P
