5 Worst Things About This Generation in Gaming

Last week we looked at five reasons why you should love the modern generation of gaming - how about why you shouldn't? Gamers have certainly been vocal about their disdain for certain games and companies as of late, with the backlash BioWare received for the ending of Mass Effect 3 and the response to Capcom's on-disc DLC scandal for Street Fighter X Tekken two prime examples of this. Have companies driven the gaming industry to the ground - or are we, as gamers and loyal fans, simply overreacting? Here's the five worst things that this generation has spawned:

Motion controls

Get the Adobe Flash Player to see this video.

To some, the inclusion of motion controls may seem a tad harsh, but when was the last time you seriously enjoyed a game on the Wii more than you did on a console using a traditional controller? Hailed as the next big thing in gaming preceding the Wii's launch in 2006, motion controls seemingly never caught the break they were itching for. That's not to say that the technology wasn't there - Microsoft's Kinect has been subject to various third-party development projects, such as 3D video capture (see video above).

While Microsoft advertises many new Xbox-branded games as "better with Kinect", truth is, most features such as voice and gesture recognition are being unnecessarily slapped on, with gamers much preferring to use a standard controller. Developers have not yet taken full advantage of the technology motion sensing has to offer - instead providing us with disappointing titles such as Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour and the embarrassment that was Kinect Star Wars (need I say why?).

Downloadable content

Equally one of the best and worst new features this generation has spawned, downloadable content is always a contentious topic. However, it is often used as a tool to rob gamers of content that should've been included at launch. Between "pre-order bonuses" and on-disc DLC, it's easy to see why so many were ruffled by the revelation that Capcom had included downloadable characters on the (Street Fighter X Tekken) disc that could only be unlocked for a price - why should we be made to pay for something that's already on our discs that we've paid for?

DLC has led to a level of greed previously unseen in the gaming industry - unless you're willing to fork out extra money for pre-order bonuses and added content, you're not going to receive the full package.

Less diversity

Guns, guns and more guns. With the runaway success of titles such as Halo and Call of Duty, it seems as if developers see violence as the ultimate catalyst for sales. Nearly every AAA game being developed these days features some form of weaponry and violence - it's no secret that some of the most popular games of the last year (such as Skyrim, Max Payne 3 and Borderlands 2) all possess this common theme.

This dependence on violence has ultimately led to less diversity within recent games, with developers and publishers preferring to play it safe rather than take a gamble on something that may be "too different".

Online passes

Essentially a publisher's way of trying to prevent used game sales, online passes are yet another annoyance that has come to prevalence in recent times. It's just another means for companies to make even more money off gamers - a questionable one, at that. Take those who own an Xbox Live subscription - to get online, you pay your ISP, you then pay Microsoft to use their service, and in the case of some used games, you then pay the publisher to access the online functionality within the game.

It's all a bit much and is nothing less than milking us consumers for all we're worth - once you own the disc, you should own its contained content, regardless of when you purchased it.

Broken games

With the advent of the Internet comes developer laziness. Developers are now able to patch their games at will, updating their games with added content and patches to fix bugs all in real-time. Sure, that sounds like a good thing on paper, but it's lead to all kinds of buggy releases within the last few years. Take anything by Bethesda (Fallout 3 is an excellent example), with their releases often subject to a multitude of random environmental and NPC bugs. That's not to say that Fallout 3 wasn't a great game - it certainly was no Superman 64.

Whilst even the most revered games aren't shy of their glitches (Red Dead Redemption), it certainly wouldn't hurt for developers to ensure no game-breaking or bizarre bugs are shipped with their games, no matter how much content they're offering.

Good list, but I definitely, strongly disagree with motion controls being "bad" about gaming.

They opened up the industry to millions and millions of new gamers. In my opinion, without motion controls, much of the world would still be of the belief that video games are anti-social / for nerds etc. Motion controls helped ease sooooo many people into gaming.

Not to mention, in the games where it worked well, these controls were awesome. Zelda, Metroid and Mario all come to mind immediately for Wii, although there are many many more (Okami Wii was great.. Pandora's Tower is another which showed how motion controls should be done). Also, the subtle inclusion of motion controls of some 3DS titles (eg Ocarina of Time 3D) adds a cool new way to explore environments -- without costing practicality.
Nice article..IMO kinect simply is not as good as the wii controls.. But motion gaming is NOT bad. Even move is fantastic IMO. Also I agree with DLC.. I bought borderlands 2 and not even a month later there's DLC that I think should have been in the game in the first place.. :S
Online passes.... Worst idea ever
Buggy and glitchy Games.

you pay your money for a game that quite hasn't been finished properly.

I wish in my line of work i could get paid for not finishing the job

Kinnect is a joke really. Kung fu panda 2 perfect example. Can only use with kinnect. Guess what though it doesn't work lol.
Bugs and glitches are rampant in all generations.

It's now more noticeable because there are far more variables to work with in modern games.

Skyward Sword
I disagree with diversity, but the others I'm open to accepting.

I think that the online platforms have paved the way for many different games. In the same way Hollywood relies on the blockbuster action flick to keep people going to the cinemas, publishers and platform holders need that big pull for the common gamer to keep them interested. The diversity is far, far greater this generation. IMO I think you're being tricked by the AMPLIFICATION of games like Call Of Duty, that you think that's all there is. XBLA, PSN both have a fantastic variety of games. They are definitely there.

I also don't think there's been any more shooters this gen than there were last gen. PS2, Xbox have a STACK of FPS game, and a lot of shovelware.

It's a double-edged sword because if you offer that variety then you need to limit quality control, and limiting quality control can compromise the market and consumer confidence.

Gamers have confidence with franchises like CoD, Halo, Battlefield, because they know what they are getting. Games like Dishonored are great but it's a massive risk to invest in something that statistically speaking probably won't be a top seller.

This is where XBLA, PSN come in, because developers have the capacity to invest small, but get creative with games like Journey, because the market isn't as demanding of specific genres, and people are more open to trying different things with cheap products that are affordable.

I think that as gamers we have plenty of awesome options atm. Maybe it's just me *shrugs*
lets not forget the screaming rude little shits online [Rage]

I've experienced this first-hand at EB Games Expo. @Ben and I were playing Halo 3 with 8 year-olds and we had to turn the headphone sound down so that we couldn't here them talk to each other. Irritating, to say the least.
I dont believe motion control is necessary to make a good game. :/

Haha I was going to include "annoying fans" as one of the points but thought that might ruffle a few too many feathers :P
Motion controls suck ballz, but I've finally decided that they're not for us.

They're for people like mothers and grandparents who otherwise don't game and want to do it with their kids.

NOT US, so we probably shouldn't judge them as being for us.

That said, games like Ghost Recon are plastered with "Better for Kinect", which totally contradicts the whole, they aren't for us thing. In that case we should abuse the shit out of it.
Firearm violence has been around in games much earlier than CoD. Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Quake, all were very popular, and other games followed suit.
I agree of the stuff under the sub-title 'broken games'. That's becoming much more prevalent, even by developers not known to bring out such buggy messes.
The last point would be my biggest irk, especially with consoles due to their (supposed) load-and-play nature.

Point 3, 'Less diversity', is only true if you are not playing on PC. Indies all up in here, pushing boundaries all over the hizzouse.
Motion controls are better then using a controllor people only think its bad because micosoft and sony tryed to make a cheap copy of the wii verson and EPIC FAILED

ah like every time i use the console which is like everyday
Oh the online little turds, they are the worst thing right?

I also disagree with the motion control being a drag.
Sure it might not always work and frankly I cannot stand the Wii but I have a ton of fun with my Kinect and I certainly think it's paving the way for bigger, better, more responsive things.
I want more co-op games!!! Everything is about going online but loved playing against other friends in the same room and watching them squirm as I am winneerrr haha :P
